Are missing teeth affecting your confidence and preventing you from smiling? Missing teeth affect the look and function of your smile. At Abrams Family Dentistry, we use the latest technology to give you a complete and beautiful smile.

Dental implants are an option when you need to replace a single tooth or when you are missing several teeth in different areas of your mouth. This treatment involves extracting/removing the non-restorable tooth. Bone is then packed at the site of the missing tooth. It is necessary to wait 4-6 months after the bone graft before attempting to place an implant. When ready, a small titanium post is placed in the jaw bone. Another 4-6 months is necessary to wait as the implant must osseointegrate. A special tool is used to test when the implant is ready. A crown is then attached to the post creating a complete tooth. Implants can be used to support single dental crowns, implant-supported bridges, or implant-supported dentures, making them very versatile.

What Are the Main Advantages of Dental Implants?

If you have lost a tooth, the jawbone is no longer stimulated, which signals to the body that the bone should be reabsorbed. A major benefit of dental implants is that they preserve bone because they act just like your missing tooth roots. Their placement in the bone also ensures that they are very strong and will not move around while you eat or speak.

Your teeth support your facial muscles, and this is compromised if you have gaps in your smile. Dental implants make sure that your muscles are supported, which prevents sunken cheeks that can make you look older prematurely. Dental implants also prevent your teeth from shifting into the gaps in your smile, which would affect your tooth alignment.

Are You A Candidate for Dental Implants?

Not everyone is a candidate for dental implants. Missing teeth come with other side effects like bone loss. If you don’t have enough bone density to support an implant, you will have to look into getting a bone graft first. Smoking will interfere with the healing process, so you should quit before getting implants. Another thing to consider is your oral health. Any problems with your gums or cavities in your teeth need to be addressed before you get dental implants at Abrams Family Dentistry.
